SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - A Savannah couple says they were attacked in Ellis Square because they are not the same race.

Andrew Quade's eye is swollen shut and his face is swollen after the 23 year old says he was attacked in Ellis Square Friday night.

He was with his African-American girlfriend walking through the square when he says three men shouted racial slurs at them. The next thing the couple remembers, Quade was unconcious on the ground.

"He was basically left for dead. I don't want to go into all the gory details, but they could have stopped, but they kept going," said Quade's girlfriend Olufisayo Bakre.

Bakre says three black men began yelling at them as they walked to a friend's birthday party.

"One of them was making racial comments at us and one of them was blowing kisses. It was very aggravating," Bakre said.

Quade said he tried to ignore the comments.

"I didn't want to freak out on them because I thought they were saying something about me and my girlfriend. I wanted to get more information and understand the situation. But before I could, I was knocked out," Quade said.

Quade said the next thing he remembers is waking up in an ambulance.

"I think of this as a hate crime. It's that simple," Bakre said

(Jewishpress.com) -- After an attack on a rabbi in Berlin, Gideon Joffe, the head of the Berlin Jewish community, said he would “not recommend that any Jew go around in parts of Berlin with a kipah.”

On Tuesday, Rabbi Daniel Alter of Berlin was violently attacked while picking up his daughter from a piano lesson. He currently is recovering from surgery for a broken cheekbone.

 The attackers, reportedly Arab youths, asked Alter – who was wearing a kipah – if he was Jewish before hitting him in the face. They then allegedly verbally threatened Alter’s 6-year-old daughter.

Many Jewish religious leaders in the country advise their congregants against openly wearing Jewish garb in public; men routinely wear baseball caps or other hats over their yarmulkes when in public.

 Concern about openly wearing the skullcaps grew following an anti-Semitic attack on the Chabad Jewish kindergarten in Berlin in 2007.

Pakistani Man Accused of Honor Killing His Mother and Four Sisters

  
CHICHA WATNI (The Express Tribune) --  A woman and her four daughters were killed in a Chicha Watni village on Wednesday night allegedly by one of her sons.

The suspect, Khalid Allah Ditta, 26, has been arrested by Ghaziabad police who say that he has confessed to killing the women. The police said the suspect, a resident of Chak29-11 LK, was arrested by a police team from a neighbouring village on Thursday evening. They said a murder case against him was lodged on the complaint filed by his father, Allah Ditta.

Talking to The Express Tribune, Station House Officer Muhammad Wajid admitted that it was likely that the complainant would withdraw the complaint and refuse to press murder charges against his son.

He said the police would be helpless in such a situation and would have to release the suspect without prosecution.

The SHO said the complaint could not be registered by the police on their own (to prevent a withdrawal at a later stage) because a relative’s application was available for the purpose. “We may proceed against the complainant (Allah Dita) on spreading false information charge if he revokes the complaint,” he said.

The complainant, Allah Ditta, who is the suspect’s father, stated that Khalid Allah Ditta had suspected his mother Irshad Bibi, 50, and four sisters Nazia Bibi, Shazia Bibi, Sajida Bibi and Khalida Bibi of having illicit relations with some men in the neighbourhood.

It said the suspect had drugged their dinner and killed them in their sleep with an azada (a digging tool). Two of the four sisters were married but were staying at their parents’ house for some months.

Talking to The Tribune, Khalid Allah Ditta’s younger brother said he and his other brothers had been warning the deceased ‘to mend their ways but they refused to listen to their admonitions’. He said he had learnt about the killings on reaching home in the morning on Thursday from his dera where he had spent the night.

17 Afghans Beheaded By Music and Dance Hating Taliban

They don't call it the Religion of Pieces for nothing

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) -- Insurgents attacked a large party in a Taliban-controlled area of southern Afghanistan and beheaded 17 people, officials said on Monday.

The head of the local government initially said the victims were civilians at a celebration late Sunday involving music and dancing in the Musa Qala district of Helmand province.

 The official, Neyamatullah Khan, said the Taliban killed the party-goers for flouting the extreme brand of Islam embraced by the militants.

However, a provincial government official said later that those killed were caught up in a fight between two Taliban commanders over two women, who were among the dead.

 Daoud Ahmadi, a spokesman for the provincial government, said shooting broke out during the fight. He said it was unclear whether the music and dancing triggered the violence and whether the dead were all civilians or possibly included some fighters.

Ahmadi said all of the bodies were decapitated but it was not clear if they had been shot first.

Muslims In Pakistan Demand Punishment For 11 Year-Old Christian Girl Accused of Koran Desecration

Islamabad(AsiaNews) - If guilty of blasphemy, the child should be punished according to the laws of the country.

 This is a widespread view among Muslims in Pakistan, whether laymen or religious leaders, regarding the tragedy of  an 11 year old Christian girl who is disabled and was recently charged under the "black law". 

To date the child is being detained under lock and key in a reform school - pending a full hearing for release on bail - for desecrating a few pages of a book that conatined verses from the Koran (see AsiaNews 19/08/2012 An 11-year-old disabled Christian girl arrested for blasphemy, 300 families flee).

 Interviewed by AsiaNews on the issue scholar Mehmood Ahmed Khan, a member of the Islamic Ideology Council (IIc), said that "Rimsha is a minor, but if she is mentally stable and committed the crime, child or not she should be punished." He adds, "no one can be allowed to desecrate the Koran."
 
Several human rights organizations, including the Masihi Foundation and Life for All, along with the Catholic Church of Pakistan have announced a demonstration tomorrow in Lahore on August 25, demanding the release of Rimsha Masih - this is the name of the girl, arrested on blasphemy charges - and who faces up to life in prison. The incident occurred on August 17 in Umara Jaffar, G-12 Islamabad, where the family of the minor live. In response, a mob of local Muslims - egged on by the imams - attacked the Christian community, forcing hundreds of families to flee.

Bishop Rufin Anthony of Islamabad-Rawalpindi has launched a call: "it is time for the entire Christian community to unite and string around the child. Sunday - adds the prelate - our voices will be heard in support thereof." Meanwhile, the All Pakistan Minorities Alliance (APMA) has appointed parliamentarian Tahir Naveed Chaudhry lawyer to Rimsha. He assures us that "we will defend the rights of the oppressed" and has prepared "a panel of experts to plead the case." It is a "delicate matter," says the lawyer, but he is optimistic and promises "good news soon."

However, sources say that the APMA lawyer was not allowed meet the child in prison. Now the goal is to get her out of jail and put it in a safe place, since the vast majority of blasphemy deaths are the result of extra-judicial killings, even in prison under the gaze of guards (see AsiaNews 17/09 / 2009 Punjab: young Christian man accused of blasphemy killed in prison). The Christian NGO World Vision in Progress has filed an appeal for bail, which will be discussed on 28 August.

(CNN) -- Zara married for love, against her family's wishes, more than a decade ago in the Middle East. Shortly after the marriage, she and her husband, along with their two children, moved to Britain for work. There, she says, her husband began to drink, heavily. He became violent, holding a knife to her throat, she says.

"He started raping me, which affected me mentally, lots of stress and the relationship between me and my sons. I couldn't speak out because I learned that to speak out against your husband to anyone outside, it is big shame."

"So, I was struggling between eastern culture with what I learned and western culture where I should live freedom, equality, justice. I found it difficult."

She still finds it difficult. Zara is not her real name. She spoke to CNN on condition of anonymity, saying she fears for her life.

During her marriage, she says, the violence continued. She showed CNN police reports she eventually filed, but she decided not to pursue a case, and her husband was never charged. Roughly eight years into the marriage, she ran away and met another man. She decided to ask for a divorce.

"I told him I want a divorce. I don't want to cheat on you. The relationship is broken. I said, all I want is relationship with my sons."

She says her husband initially agreed but insisted they both go back to their home in the Middle East, to explain to their families.

"He gathered all his family in his house. And I was shocked to see 60 or 70 people at his house. His mother called me by very bad names. She called me a prostitute in front of my sons.

"I remember when my mother-in-law looked at my face and held my sons in her hands, big hands. She told me: 'My son is a doctor. You should hold your head up. Who are you to cheat on my son? Who are you?'

"After that, she told me: 'I will look after them, you don't deserve to be a mother. And my sons were looking at me.'"

Then, Zara says, her husband issued a death sentence, calling her father in the neighboring town, demanding she be killed for dishonoring her family -- an "honor" murder.

"He told my father, if you are a man, clean your shame. If you are a man, kill your daughter."

NYPD Hate Crime Investigation After Bacon Found At End of Ramadan Celebration...Update: Anonymous Caller Claims Responsibility

Staten Island, NY (silive.com) -- It's being investigated as a hate crime -- someone scattered pieces of bacon over the New Dorp Beach field where the borough's Muslim community celebrated the end of Ramadan Sunday morning.

But that act of desecration failed to ruin what organizers described as a successful celebration -- about 1,500 worshipers gathered at the John D'Amato Field at New Dorp Lane and Cedar Grove Avenue, unaware of the early morning police investigation that preceded the ceremony.

"Everything went smoothly," said Dr. Mohamed Sadeia, president of the Muslim American Society on Staten Island, which organized the gathering. "The community is really not aware of it.

Dr. Sadiea was one of a handful of organizers who noticed the uncooked bacon on a small section of the field at about 8 a.m.

He said he contacted police, but kept the incident and investigation quiet, because he didn't want to distress the adults and children gathering for morning prayers.

"They didn't want to ruin the happiness of one of the only two holidays of the entire year," said Hesham El-Meligy, the founder of the Islamic Civic Association-Staten Island, who said he didn't attend the outdoor ceremony but had heard about the incident.

A police spokeswoman confirmed on Sunday that the NYPD's Hate Crime Unit is investigating the incident.

Adherents of Islam are forbidden to eat pork.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (silive.com) -- An anonymous caller is taking responsibility for Sunday's possible hate crime at a New Dorp Beach field where morning Ramadan prayers were scheduled, claiming in a message to the Advance that he had been discarding spoiled bacon when he left it on the field.

"Hi, Deborah. This is-- I was reading the article about the horrible incident of bacon and Muslims in the park and I wanted to let you know that is not my intention," said the male caller, in a 9:20 a.m. message left on a reporter's voice mail Tuesday. He stops short of saying his name.

"I had put the bacon there. It was going bad in my trunk and I put it out for the scavengers like the opossums and the raccoons and sea gulls, and I did not intend for that to cause anybody any problems.

"It was not any (inaudible) anti-Muslim act, and I did not want to offend anybody in any way. Thank you and have a good day."

Pregnant Muslim Woman Beaten By Husband For Removing Face Veil In Public

(ANSAmed) - Porto Empedocle (Sicily), August 17 - An Egyptian man brutally beat his pregnant wife Friday after she took off her veil in an attempt to find relief from the scorching heat.

The woman, a 20-year-old from the town of Porto Empedocle in Sicily's southern province of Agrigento, was taken to hospital for treatment.

The man, 19 years old, was stopped by police after the incident and charged with assault.

The couple live in Turin for work reasons and had come to Porto Empedocle on vacation, to visit the woman's parents.

 According to the woman, whose father is Tunisian, she had asked her husband's permission to remove the veil because she was having trouble breathing.

The husband at first responded by yelling at her, perhaps in hope of intimidating her, she said. When she removed the veil, he beat her for her lack of respect and also threatened passersby who tried to intervene on her behalf.

Neville Chamberlain Lives: Hamburg Germany Signs 'Deal' With Muslim Groups

(The Local) --  Hamburg authorities have signed a deal with the city's Muslim community groups guaranteeing Islamic holidays, school religion lessons, and burial rights. It's the first agreement of its kind in Germany.

"Something that should be taken for granted has gained a lot of attention," Hamburg's centre-left mayor Olaf Scholz said as he presented the new agreement on Tuesday. It is the first ever deal between a German state and its Muslim community, Scholz said - "a signal that we're ready and willing to cooperate."

The 11-page agreement, which still has to be approved by the city parliament, is meant to regulate religious freedoms, school lessons, burial rituals, and recognition of Germany's constitution, the taz newspaper reported.

The deal, which has been in negotiations since 2007, was signed by the council of Islamic communities (Schura), the Turkish-Islamic Union (Ditib), the association of Islamic cultural centres (VIKZ), as well as the city's Alevi community.

These community groups, representing the Hamburg's 120,000 Muslims, have agreed to recognize the "basic values of constitutional order," to reject "violence and discrimination based on origin, sexual orientation, and faith" and "religious and political viewpoints," and to recognize "equality between genders."

In exchange, Hamburg city authorities will declare Eid al-Adha ("Festival of Sacrifice"), Eid ul-Fitr (the end of Ramadan), and the Day of Ashura ("Day of Mourning"), officially recognised holidays.

Muslim and Alevi workers will be allowed to take these days off, and their children will be allowed to stay out of school if they wish - under the same conditions that Christians can take Church holidays such as the Day of Repentance off. This means they have the right to take the day off - either taking it as holiday or in return for another working day.

The deal also promises Islamic communities more say in how religious lessons in school are formed.

Similar deals were signed with the city's Protestant and Catholic churches in 2005, and with the Jewish community in 2007.

Schura official Daniel Abdin described the agreement as "an important step towards the institutional recognition of Islam in Germany," while Aziz Aslandemir of the Alevi community organization said, "We hope that this contract will be seen as a spark for other German states."

 (CNN)  -- Mohammed reclaimed its place as the most popular name for baby boys born in England and Wales in 2011 - convincingly ahead of Harry, in second place, according to data released by the government this week.

The government declared that Harry was the most popular boy's name, but if you add up the five most popular different spellings of Mohammed, that name comes top.

Mohammed is also the most popular boy's name of the past five years for England and Wales, ahead of Oliver and Jack. It came first or second every year since 2007, the only name to do so.

And it could become even more popular in 2012, given the adulation around long-distance runner Mo Farah, who won two gold medals for Britain at the Olympics.

The popularity of the name comes as Britain's Muslim population is expected to double in the next 20 years.

The country, which was about 2% Muslim in 1990, grew to 4.6% Muslim in 2010, with nearly 2.9 million followers of the faith, according to analysis by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life.

By 2030, the United Kingdom will be just over 8% Muslim, with more than 5.5 million adherents, the Washington-based think tank projected in a 2011 report, "The Future of the Global Muslim Population."

Muslima To File Discrimination Suit Against Disney Over Hijab Ban

 LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A former Disneyland employee who says she was forbidden to wear a Muslim head scarf at work plans to sue the Walt Disney Co. for discrimination.

The federal suit is expected to be filed Monday in Los Angeles on behalf of Imane Boudlal.

Boudlal was a restaurant hostess at the Anaheim theme park but hasn't worked there for about two years.

Boudlal says she was forbidden to wear the head scarf because it wasn't part of her approved work costume. Disney says she refused to wear a specially designed hat instead or to accept jobs away from customers.

     THE PRESIDENT:  Thank you, everybody.  (Applause.)  Please, please have a seat.  Good evening, everyone.  And welcome to the White House.

Of all the freedoms we cherish as Americans, of all the rights that we hold sacred, foremost among them is freedom of religion, the right to worship as we choose.  It’s enshrined in the First Amendment of our Constitution -- the law of the land, always and forever.  It beats in our heart -- in the soul of the people who know that our liberty and our equality is endowed by our Creator.  And it runs through the history of this house, a place where Americans of many faiths can come together and celebrate their holiest of days -- and that includes Ramadan.

As I’ve noted before, Thomas Jefferson once held a sunset dinner here with an envoy from Tunisia -- perhaps the first Iftar at the White House, more than 200 years ago.  And some of you, as you arrived tonight, may have seen our special display, courtesy of our friends at the Library of Congress -- the Koran that belonged to Thomas Jefferson.  And that's a reminder, along with the generations of patriotic Muslims in America, that Islam -- like so many faiths -- is part of our national story.

This evening, we’re honored to be joined by members of our diplomatic corps, members of Congress -- including Muslim American members of Congress, Keith Ellison and Andre Carson -- as well as leaders from across my administration.  And to you, the millions of Muslim Americans across our country, and to the more than one billion Muslims around the world -- Ramadan Kareem.

Now, every faith is unique.  And yet, during Ramadan, we see the traditions that are shared by many faiths:  Believers engaged in prayer and fasting, in humble devotion to God.  Families gathering together with love for each other.  Neighbors reaching out in compassion and charity, to serve the less fortunate.  People of different faiths coming together, mindful of our obligations to one another -- to peace, justice and dignity for all people -- men and women.  Indeed, you know that the Koran teaches, "Be it man or woman, each of you is equal to the other."

And by the way, we’ve seen this in recent days.  In fact, the Olympics is being called "The Year of the Woman."  (Laughter.)  Here in America, we’re incredibly proud of Team USA -- all of them -- but we should notice that a majority of the members are women.  Also, for the very first time in Olympic history, every team now includes a woman athlete.  And one of the reasons is that every team from a Muslim-majority country now includes women as well.  And more broadly -- that's worth applauding.  (Applause.)  Absolutely.

More broadly, we’ve seen the extraordinary courage of Muslim women during the Arab Spring -- women, right alongside men, taking to the streets to claim their universal rights, marching for their freedom, blogging and tweeting and posting videos, determined to be heard.  In some cases, facing down tanks, and braving bullets, enduring detentions and unspeakable treatment, and at times, giving their very lives for the freedom that they seek -- the liberty that we are lucky enough to enjoy here tonight.

Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood's Morsi Moves To Reclaim Power From Military

   CAIRO (VOA) — Egypt's new President Mohamed Morsi has forced out the country's top two military officers, announcing the immediate retirement of  Defense Minister Mohammed Hussein Tantawi and Army Chief of Staff Sami Annan. The move comes after growing tensions over military operations in the northern Sinai, following a recent attack by militants that killed 17 Egyptian soldiers.

 

News that President Morsi had fired Defense Minister Tantawi and Army Chief of Staff Annan struck on a quiet summer afternoon as most Egyptians fasted for Ramadan.

 

The president's spokesman, Yasser Ali, announced replacements for the two top officers on state television. He said Morsi was also annulling constitutional amendments that gave military commanders sweeping powers.

 

​​He said the president has named Mahmoud Mekki as his vice president, that he is ordering Defense Minister Mohammed Hussein Tantawi to retire, along with Army Chief of Staff Sami Annan.

 

Morsi was shown on state TV swearing in his new Defense Minister, Abdel Fattah al Sissi.

 

The new defense minister said he swears to protect the nation and its presidential system and to respect the constitution and the law, to defend the people's interests and the borders of the country.

 

It was not immediately clear if the president's decision would provoke a constitutional crisis. Field Marshall Tantawi and top generals of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces had given themselves powers before the presidential election that some analysts compared to a “check-and-balance” system.

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama on Friday called Huma Abedin, a top aide to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, an "American patriot" after a group of Republican lawmakers accused her of having ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist political organization.

"She has been nothing less than extraordinary in representing our country and the democratic values that we hold dear," Obama said at a White House Iftar dinner celebrating the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

"The American people owe her a debt of gratitude because Huma is an American patriot and an example of what we need in this country -- more public servants with her sense of decency, her grace and her generosity of spirit."

In June, Representative Michele Bachmann along with four other Republican lawmakers questioned Abedin's security clearance in a letter to the State Department's inspector general.

They suggested members of her family had connections to the Muslim Brotherhood, which the writers said may be seeking access to high levels of the U.S. government.

"If my family members were associated with Hamas, a terrorist organization, that alone could be sufficient to disqualify me from getting a security clearance," Bachmann said on conservative host Glenn Beck's talk show.

Pakistani Taliban Wants Fatwa Issued Against Democracy

Peshawar (zeenews.com) --  The Pakistani Taliban have reportedly written a letter to senior clerics of the country seeking a diktat against the democratic system and security forces; and explaining why the banned outfit had rebelled against the state.

According to the Daily Times, the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in its six-page letter asked how could the Members of Parliament be called Muslims if they had failed to legislate for enforcement of Shariah.

TTP also appealed to the sentiments of clerics by mentioning how the Army was killing the "mujahideen" who, it said, were fighting for enforcement of God's law in Pakistan.

The TTP said thousands of "mujahideen" had been killed in Army-led operations. They also complained about the clerics who were "silent" when the government was publicly acknowledging being a "front-line ally of America and NATO".

Pakistani Taliban Threatens To Kill Self-Described 'Liberal' Muslim Politician

(The Telegraph) -- The Taliban have threatened to kill the former Pakistan cricket captain-turned-politician Imran Khan if he holds a planned march to their tribal stronghold along the Afghan border to protest US drone attacks.

Although the Pakistani Taliban also oppose the strikes, which have killed many of their fighters, spokesman Ahsanullah Ahsan said they would target Mr Khan because he calls himself a "liberal" – a term they associate with a lack of religious belief.

He also warned they would attack anyone who participates in forthcoming elections.

"If he comes, our suicide bombers will target him," Ahsan told The Associated Press in an interview in the militant group's stronghold of South Waziristan. "We will kill him."

The threat could come as a surprise to many in Pakistan who have criticised Mr Khan for not being tough enough on the Pakistani Taliban and instead focusing most of his criticism on the government's alliance with the US.

Some of his critics have nicknamed him "Taliban Khan" because of his views and his cosy ties with conservative Islamists who could help him attract right-wing voters in national elections likely to be held later this year or early next year.

Mr Khan, who is the founder of the Pakistan Movement for Justice party, has gained momentum over the last year after more than a decade in politics. He is perhaps the most famous person in Pakistan because he led the country's cricket team to victory in the 1992 World Cup.

He has described himself as a liberal in various TV interviews, but he has also made clear that he is a practicing Muslim.

Ahsan, the Taliban spokesman, seemed to ignore that distinction and said the militants did not want Mr Khan's help in opposing drone attacks.

Khan has said he is planning to lead thousands of people in a march to Waziristan in September to demonstrate against the strikes.

DENVER (Reuters) - President Barack Obama used a campaign stop in Colorado on Wednesday to call for an end to "senseless violence" across the country, appealing to Americans to focus on ways to stop it.

Referring to the shootings at a movie theater in Colorado and at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin in recent weeks, as well as last year's shooting of former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and others in Arizona, Obama stopped short of calling for gun control but said concerted action was needed.

"We've got to put an end to this kind of senseless violence, whether it's in Aurora, whether it's in Oak Creek, whether it's in Tucson, whether it's in cities all across America where too many lives are cut short," he said in Denver.

"As one American family, we're going to have to come together and look at all the approaches that we can take to try to bring an end to it."

 Gen. Nuristani further added at least 500 local residents of Paron district participated in the demonstration.

According to provincial education department chief Dr. Ghulam Hussain hundreds of books including religious books and 300 Qurans were burnt inside the school.

Provincial security Chief Gen. Ghulamullah Nuristani said the demonstrators were shouting anti-Taliban slogans and urged for justice.

Obama sought to draw a stark contrast with Romney, pointing out that the former Massachusetts governor said he intended to take the health care law and "kill it dead" on his first day in office and "get rid" of Planned Parenthood.

"They want to take us back to the policies more suited to the 1950s than the 21st century," Obama told a largely female crowd of about 4,000 at a campaign event in Denver.

 He argued that decisions affecting a woman's health are "not up to politicians, they're not up to insurance companies. They're up to you."

Obama Regime Proposes Prisoner Swap With Taliban

(Reuters) - The Obama administration, in a move aimed at reviving Afghan peace talks, has sweetened a proposed deal under which it would transfer Taliban detainees from Guantanamo Bay prison in exchange for a U.S. soldier held by Taliban allies in Pakistan.

The revised proposal, a concession from an earlier U.S. offer, would alter the sequence of the move of five senior Taliban figures held for years at the U.S. military prison to the Gulf state of Qatar, sources familiar with the issue said.

U.S. officials have hoped the prisoner exchange, proposed as a good-faith move in initial discussions between U.S. negotiators and Taliban officials, would open the door to peace talks between militants and the government of Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

The revised proposal would send all five Taliban prisoners to Qatar first, said sources who spoke on condition of anonymity. Only then would the Taliban be required to release Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, the only U.S. prisoner of war.

(Washington DC)-– Judicial Watch announced today that it has obtained records from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) indicating that the General Services Administration (GSA), with the blessing of the Obama White House, instructed law enforcement officers to “stand down” and not arrest “Occupy Portland” protestors who were in violation of the law.

The records, obtained pursuant to a November 11, 2011, Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, include internal DHS correspondence. One November 6, 2011, e-mail exchange between DHS/National Protection and Programs Directorate Chief of Staff Caitlin Durkovich and GSA Public Buildings Service Commissioner Robert Peck (who has since been fired) specifically related to Occupy Portland protests taking place on federal property in Portland:

I am sorry to be emailing you on a Sunday night, but wanted to let you know our Press Shop has received a couple of calls from Portland media outlets about a group of 11 protesters who again set up camp at Terry Shrunk Plaza in Portland last night. They have chained themselves to a large drum filled with concrete.

GSA controls the permits and has asked FPS [Federal Protective Services] not to enforce the curfew at park and the prohibition on overnight encampments. Reporters have asked if we will be arresting the protestors as FPS did last week.

Our FPS Commander in Portland says they are standing down and following GSA’s request to only intervene if there is a threat to public safety.

Peck responds:

Caitlin: yes, that is our position; it’s been vetted with our Administrator and Michael Robertson, our chief of staff, and we have communicated with the WH [White House], which has afforded us the discretion to fashion our approach to Occupy issues…The arrests last week were carried out despite our request that the protesters be allowed to remain and to camp overnight…

Occupy Portland is part of the Occupy Wall Street movement, which has been beset with accusations of “crimes and dangerous behavior” during its protests.

(Yahoo! News) -- A pro-Obama super PAC, Priorities USA Action, unleashed what may be the most vicious and personal attack ad of the 2012 election cycle to date, effectively blaming Mitt Romney for the death of a laid-off steelworker's wife from cancer.

The Romney campaign hit back hard, calling the charge "dishonest" and "contemptible."

 The stark, minute-long commercial, entitled "Understands," features Joe Soptic, who lost his job and his health benefits after Romney's Bain Capital closed the GST Steel plant in Kansas City, Kan.—a move that has been the subject of pro-Obama ads before.

"I don't think Mitt Romney understands what he's done to people's lives by closing the plant," says Soptic, echoing recurring Democratic attacks on the former Massachusetts governor's tenure at Bain.

 But here is the rest of the script: "When Mitt Romney and Bain closed the plant, I lost my health care, and my family lost their health care. And a short time after that, my wife became ill. I don't know how long she was sick and I think maybe she didn't say anything because she knew that we couldn't afford the insurance. And then one day she became ill and I took her up to the Jackson County Hospital and admitted her for pneumonia, and that's when they found the cancer and by then it was stage four. It was, there was nothing they could do for her. And she passed away in 22 days. I do not think Mitt Romney realizes what he's done to anyone, and furthermore I do not think Mitt Romney is concerned."

 With 8.3 percent unemployment nationwide and the economy still sputtering three and a half years after Obama took office, the president's supporters have tried to paint Romney as a heartless practitioner of locust capitalism, someone who will fight for the very rich at the expense of everyone else.

 At a fundraiser in Connecticut on Monday, Obama himself dubbed his presumptive opponent "Romney Hood."

(CNN) -- A new attack ad by a Super PAC backing President Obama appears to blame Mitt Romney for a woman's death from cancer after his company, Bain Capital, shut down the steel mill where the woman's husband worked.

The ad makes it seem like Joe Soptic's wife, Ilyona, lost her battle with cancer shortly after he lost his job at GST Steel in Missouri, where he had worked for almost 30 years.

"When Mitt Romney closed the plant I lost my healthcare, and my family lost their healthcare," Soptic says in the ad put out by Priorities USA Action, the main pro-Obama super PAC. "A short time after that, my wife became ill. I don’t know how long she was sick and I think maybe she didn’t say anything because she knew we couldn’t afford the insurance."

It's a very heart-wrenching story, but it’s not accurate.

 Here is the actual timeline:

Romney stopped his day-to-day oversight at Bain Capital in 1999 when he left to run the Salt Lake City Olympics, though he officially remained CEO until 2002. Bain Capital shut down GST Steel in 2001, costing Soptic his job.

According to Mr. Soptic, his wife received her primary insurance through her employer – a local thrift store called Savers – and retained it even after his layoff. Soptic's policy through GST Steel was her secondary coverage.

In 2002, Mitt Romney formally left Bain. Sometime in 2002 or 2003, Mr. Soptic says his wife injured her rotator cuff and was forced to leave her job. As a result she lost her health insurance coverage and Mr. Soptic's new job as a janitor did not provide coverage for his spouse.

It was a few years later, in 2006, that Ilyona Soptic went to the hospital with symptoms of pneumonia. She was diagnosed with stage four cancer and passed away just days later.

French Muslim Woman Defies Burka Ban...Incites Riot and Assaults Cops

AFP -- A French Muslim woman has been charged with assault and inciting a riot after she refused a police ID check because she was wearing a banned full-face veil, a police source said Tuesday.

The 18-year-old is to appear in court in the northern city of Lille on October 30 charged with assault, insulting police and inciting a riot after police tried to take her to a station for refusing to provide identification.

A French law passed in 2011, the first of its kind to be enforced in Europe, banned the wearing of the full-face-covering Islamic veil.

The law came into effect at an already fraught moment in relations between the state and France's Muslim minority -- the largest in Europe -- with then president Nicolas Sarkozy accused of stigmatising Islam to win back votes from a resurgent far right in this year's election.

Supporters of the law have defended it as a measure aimed at supporting women's rights although the text makes it clear that a woman cannot choose herself to cover her face in public.

Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-eranged) Introduces Cell Phone Radiation Warning Bill

(The Washington Times) -- Rep. Dennis Kucinich has introduced a bill that would require cell phones to warn consumers how much radiation is coming from their phones, saying that until science can disprove a link to cancer, the public should be told more information.

His bill, the Cell Phone Right to Know Act, would also demand a study of cell phones and health, looking at a broad array of signals that smart phones now send out, ranging from the phone to bluetooth to WiFi.

"Consumers have a right to know the radiation levels of cell phones and whether they are buying the phone with the lowest — or the highest — level of exposure to cell phone radiation," the Ohio Democrat said.

"They also deserve to have up-to-date exposure standards that are put together by health professionals without conflicts of interest."

"Thank you very much for visiting us again, dear friend," Chavez said after introducing Penn to the big crowd in the central city of Valencia. "We're all Americans, from the north, the center, the south. Long live the American continent!"

Penn, in a white shirt and sunglasses and accompanied by Argentine producer Fernando Sulichin, waved from the stage, fist-bumped and hugged Chavez, but did not address the rally.

The Oscar-winning actor, screenwriter and director is well-known for his political and social activism.
